True to its name, the University of Somalia (UNISO) stands as an institution for all Somalis. As one of the leading private higher education institutions in the country, UNISO is committed to maintaining a non-political, non-partisan and non-sectarian ethos. It is a place where students from diverse social and religious backgrounds are welcomed, valued, and supported in achieving their academic aspirations and career goals. UNISO takes pride in its team of highly qualified and competent faculty members who are dedicated to imparting knowledge and equipping students with the skills necessary for success in their chosen fields. Currently, the University serves approximately 7000 students enrolled in a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs tailored to their interests and ambitions.
With six campuses across Mogadishu, UNISO offers 36 undergraduate and 12 graduate programs under eight distinct faculties, ensuring a comprehensive and diverse academic experience. Beyond its educational contributions, the University of Somalia is also the largest employer in Mogadishu’s higher education sector, providing livelihood to over 500 employees.
History
The University of Somalia (UNISO) was founded in 2005 by a group of independent scholars. Its establishment came at a critical time when access to post-secondary education for Somali youth was severely limited due to decades of prolonged unrest and statelessness in the country. Driven by a vision to address this gap, the founders sought to create a credible, responsive, and sustainable institution that would contribute to the resilience and societal development of the Somali people. UNISO focuses on delivering quality higher education that bridges career gaps among the younger generation, equipping them with skills and knowledge to thrive in a challenging environment. By offering tertiary education programs tailored to meet market and social demands, the university strives to promote better standards of living, justice, equity, and good governance in Somalia.
