The Faculty of Natural Resources Science, situated on the 21st January Campus, is one of the six faculties at the University of Somalia (UNISO). Established in September 2015, it is the university’s newest faculty, created in response to the pressing shortage of agricultural and veterinary professionals in the country. Its mission is to address these critical needs while also contributing to the advancement of public health.
Unfortunately, despite the critical role of agricultural and veterinary products as the backbone of the nation’s economy, this sector has received insufficient attention, and agricultural higher education is frequently perceived as an undesirable last resort for many students. Recognizing this gap, UNISO is committed to shifting this mindset and highlighting the vital importance of this field in driving the country’s economic development. Through dedicated efforts, UNISO aims to inspire greater appreciation and investment in agricultural education, ensuring its recognition as a cornerstone of national progress.
The mission of the faculty is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for pursuing graduate degrees in agricultural and veterinary sciences through a combination of rigorous coursework and immersive laboratory experiences. Since the first semester of 2015, students have been offered the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with animals at a chicken farm affiliated with UNISO. This practical training has significantly enhanced the program’s appeal, attracting students not only from the Mogadishu region but also from across the country.
