Department of Education
Educational Aims and Goals
Department of Education believes that individualized, facilitative, and socially useful higher education requires a combination of professional and theoretical training balanced with responsible participation in society. Therefore, it emphasizes that graduates in general and teachers in particular need to be broadly educated and must be trained in depth in their field of study so as to be able to teach at the secondary level and to compete successfully when undertaking graduate studies. Likewise, it is equally important that they clearly see how their discipline relates to the rest of society and that they are able to communicate with those not trained in their discipline.
To this end, the Department aims to:
Academic Divisions
This department consists of two divisions: Biology and Chemistry, and Math and Physics. Therefore, the department has established requirements for a four years Bachelor’s degree in the following three categories:
Each student must follow one of the concentration patterns described in the sections devoted to Academic Divisions. In general each student must complete one of the major concentration programs and one of the minor concentration programs
Minimum of 18 courses = 54 credit hours
Minimum of 8 courses = 24 credit hours
Minimum of 8 courses = 24 credit hours
Minimum of 14 courses = 42 credit hours
All graduates from this department are required to complete a professional training in Education. In order to fulfill such requirement, all students must take the courses and credit hours in PTE offered by the relevant division.
The Department of Education gives priority to the quality of the education received by its graduates. Consequently certain standers are maintained by the department. Students are expected to maintain a grade average of 2.0 on a four point system. As such,
All students at Department of Education divisions are expected to complete a common course work in addition to their major and minor fields of study. The purpose of the core general education requirements is to equip graduates with the competences required from the teachers in the secondary education. Teaching in secondary schools places great demands on the professional teachers..
Requirements for Graduation
Each academic year is made up of two regular 16 weeks per semesters. Graduation requires the completion of a minimum of 130 credit hours and a maximum of 144 credit hours. No student shall take more than 144 credit hours unless approved by the university.
In order to graduate, a student must maintain a minimum of 2.25 GPA in his/her major area of study, 2.0 GPA in his/her minor concentration, and 2.0 in his general education course work. The following tables show the courses currently offered by the two divisions of the department:
