The aim of this agreement is to develop collaborative programmes in which the two institutions can work together, and to promote exchange programmes for staff and students.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Somalia, Dr. Ismail A. Siad said the MoU signing is a significant event for higher education in the UNISO. He added that “the MoU looks at various fields of collaboration with MUST in a way that will signal a new era of student exchange and academic cooperation”. These areas of cooperation as outlined in the MoU include:
Exchange of faculty members;
Exchange of students;
Joint research activities and academic programmes;
Participation in international seminars and academic meetings;
Exchange of academic materials and other information;
Special short-term trainings and capacity building courses.
On his side, Prof. Celestino Obua, the Vice-Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology expressed his delight towards the signed Memorandum of Understanding. He promised that UNISO graduates will be given priority when it comes to granting scholarships. He also indicated that UNISO graduates will be treated as Ugandan students where they will be responsible only for their own expenses such as travel, food, and accommodation and health care costs. Definitely, this will be good news and a huge opportunity for UNISO students willing to pursue their postgraduate studies in Uganda.
The MoU also notes that the two institutions will look towards developing joint research activities and academic programmes that will enable more students and faculty members to continue their studies and professional development without the need to leave their home country. In doing so, educational options and opportunities for UNISO students are set to broaden following the signing of this MoU between UNISO and MUST.
The signing ceremony was held at the Sahafi International Hotel in Mogadishu on 16th April 2016 in the presence of representatives from both institutions. The signing was done by UNISO Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ismail A. Siad, and Prof. Celestino Obua, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of MUST. At the end of signing ceremony, the MUST delegation was given a detailed tour of the UNISO campuses where the delegation members not only got a better idea of the general security situation in Mogadishu, but also appreciated the progress made by the University of Somalia.
